Ten Things Thursday: Blogs I love!

I am a little late tonight, I know, but after a hectic week, I took today just do pretty much nothing. It was nice to not have to do much of anything. I deep cleaned yesterday, well, the living room, kitchen, and office area, so there was nothing nagging in the back of my mind to get up and do something. I almost did not blog today, but I did mention on the fan page last night that I would post today, so here we go.

Today I am going to be brief, because the blogs I am going to direct you to will speak for themselves. I love reading other people's blogs, and these are just ten of those. These are in no particular order, and do not feel left out if your blog is not listed here, as I intend to do this list once a month this year. So without further ado, here is the first installment of Blogs I Love! ( Click the title of each blog to be taken to that blog, it will open in a new window! )

1. Aoibheal's Lair

I know I add Vickie to all most every list I make for these types of things, but she is seriously one of my favorite people on this Earth and I love her blog very much, and I would even if we were not good friends. She writes about all kinds of things. Magic, and recipes, and life in general, both the light and the dark side. She and I are very much alike *in my opinion* and I just love her. Go check her out, and you might love her blog too!

2. The Secret Life of the American Working Witch

As I am  sure most people know, this is Kallan Kennedy's blog. She lights a fire in me, to learn, to stand up for what I believe in, for justice, and many other things. Her weekly "Sunday Stew" is something I look forward to all week!  The more I get to know her, the more I love her.

3. Down to Earth

This blog is amazing. It is all about living simply, and having practical skills like cooking, knitting, soap making, gardening, sustainable living, budgeting, the works. It gives the feeling that you are reading your grandmother's blog. ( I mean this in the best way possible! )

4. Airing My Dirty Laundry, One Sock At A Time

I love the way Amber writes. She is hysterically funny, realistic and down to earth, and she is one of my  all time favorite blogs to read. She also has some the most adorable kids I have ever seen.

5. The Oddly Normal Life of a Pagan Mom

This is a new find for me, but it has quickly become one of my favorites. I enjoy the way she writes ( Long and detailed posts, which I love to read and write. The fact that social networking has reduced a lot of people's attention spans to gnats, which results in a lot of two-short-paragraph blog posts irks me. ) When I read  her posts, it feels like I am listening to a dear friend tell me about their day or what is happening in their life. It feels natural. I enjoy it immensely!

6. Merlin's Magical Mistress

This blog has a little bit of everything. Magic, recipes, tips, music, great pictures, and a lot more!

7. Daddy Doin' Work

I guess you would classify this as a "Daddy Blog," but I consider it so much more. He is funny, intelligent, kind and loving, adores his family, and is one of the most upbeat and positive bloggers out there in my opinion. I love this blog!

8. Pray to the Moon

This is also a recent find for me, but I am enamored with this blog already. Magical, with lots of images and various "Moon" related things,  it is a blog that will engage the senses.

9. The Country Cook

Y'all know I had to throw a foodie blog in there at some point, right? Great recipes and gorgeous pictures make this a very yummy blog!

10. Bohemian Valhalla

An art blog of sorts, Bohemian Valhalla is a photo heavy experience in beautiful chaos. Making art from found treasure, there is always something new and wonderful to be seen. I can spend hours there!

There you have it folks! Ten  blogs that I love to read and spend time at. Do you have any favorites that you want to share with me? Leave them in the comments!

Ten Things Thursday: Ten Things I want to Accomplish in 2013

It is the first Ten Things Thursday of the new year! Today I am going to share with you ten things I want to accomplish in 2013. I don't do resolutions, as I have learned that my life will do everything it can to make sure I do not keep them. Usually I do not make any type of goal list, but I feel the need to do so this year. So,  here we go!

1. Write every day.

It might not be in the blog, but after finding this quote:

"WRITE EVERY DAY, the Muse insists. Don't skip a day no matter how you're feeling, no matter how many wars your country is fighting, no matter how many tornado's are heading your way. Crawl into your storm cellar and pick up a pen. If you can't think of anything to say, write the word God again and again. If you don't believe in God, write the word dog. Everyone believes in dogs. ("Sy Safransky's Notebook," The Sun, July 2011)

I, along with a few others who liked the idea, are going to make the effort to write SOMEWHERE daily. I got burnt out in October, not because I do not enjoy writing, but because I was going through an emotional shit storm while jumping into three intensive projects at once. It was not a smart idea, but time marches on and I feel more mentally and emotionally put together than I have in over a year. So I will be writing somewhere every day, even if it is for my eyes only.

2. Write in the blog more often.

I seem to go through these phases where I write a lot, and then I just stop for a while. It is not something I am fond of and I would like to be more consistent. Maybe I will not feel so disjointed about it. I have been reading writing tips, and a lot of professional writers say that you have to treat it as a job, even if you are a freelance writer. Set aside a time to write every day, and do it. It will train your mind into doing what needs to be done, and hopefully keep things flowing, instead of barfing words up all over the place and then having nothing left, as the "stomach" is empty.

3. Reduce the clutter in my house by at least 50%

I have a very tiny home, and Jack and I both have a love for big furniture. We do not even have a kitchen table, as there is no room for it. My large computer desk is there. We also have a daughter who INSISTS we keep every scrap of paper, every art project, every math paper, or anything else she does, forever. I can't count how many times I have stuffed old school work and scribbles on paper to the bottom of the trash while she is at school or asleep, or even taken the trash totally out to the big can outside so she would not see me do it. She is a great artist but as she loves to draw, it adds up in a hurry. I keep the most special ones, and I have scanned a ton of others to my computer, but I still have paper stuffed in to various drawers and cabinets until they are filled to the bursting point. I have explained to her that we do not have room, and that we could keep the favorites, but it is one thing she flips out about...so I have to be covert about it.

4. Become more organized by at least 50%

This ties in to number three, but as I mentioned, our place is tiny and we have big stuff. We have very little usable floor space to put bookshelves or dressers or things like that, but what we do have is a lot of empty wall space. So Jack has agreed to build shelves and mount them on various walls, and I will obtain boxes and baskets and things in which to organize stuff. Our clutter is not visible, but it is stuffed behind cabinet doors and in places you can not see. I still know it is there, and every time I open certain drawers or cabinets, I have to beware of the avalanche. So I would like to get a handle on all of that.

5. Continue with weight loss

I am hesitant to even put this here, because I am not actively trying to lose weight, and I am fully aware that the stress of the last year is the biggest reason I have lost 43 pounds in the last 17 months. It is also because I am more active these days, as I never seem to be able to sit still. I can tell in the way my clothes fit, the pant sizes I have dropped, and the way I feel, but to me at least, it is not much of a visible change. So maybe I should change that to I would like to get more toned. I would like to physically see the change.

6. Read more.

I am and have always been a very voracious reader, but the last few months I have read considerably less than I usually do. I would like to get back to it.

7. Strengthen my relationships with friends and family.

Being caught in the nasty claws of depression for the better part of a year means I have been withdrawn and solitary. I have found it hard to talk to people, and they have found it hard to talk to me because of it. I want to reach out more and cultivate those relationships that I am fortunate enough to have.

8. Be more artistic.

I have a wealth of crafting and artistic materials here, and I have said in the past I am not a "crafty mom" and it is true, I am not. But I enjoy painting, walls as well as art, and I want to do more of both. We already have the paint for the walls, and I already have the paint for the art. I just have to do it.

9. Learn a new skill.

I have things to learn to knit and to crochet, but my shaky hands have kept me from doing it. Since the meds I am on have helped me, I am thinking of taking it up again. If not that, then maybe something practical like soap making or candle making. If the world goes south, those would be things that are handy to know.

10. Expand my knowledge base.

Last but not least, and the easiest of them all, is to just keep learning. The last 24 hours alone have led me to learn about something I knew pretty much nothing about. My mind is the best thing about me, and I want to stuff just as much knowledge in to it as I can. Never, ever stop learning!

So there you have it. My basic list of things I want to accomplish this year. None of them are super hard, but they can be time consuming, and time is the one thing I have an excess of. Plus, all of them will be beneficial and make things better for us.

Is there anything special you want to accomplish this year?

Ten Things Thursday: Thankful Edition

I am finally doing another Ten Things Thursday post yay!

After a rough month, I feel the need to remind myself that I have things to be be grateful for, so here are ten things I am thankful for.

1. Family:

Due to contracting a terrible cold from Alex, we were unable to attend Thanksgiving at my mother's house. I was very unhappy, but my Mom was understanding and even brought us each a big plate of yummy food, so we would not miss out on dinner. That was very sweet and I am very grateful that she did that.

2. Friends:

I am lucky enough to have friends who are my chosen family. I know a lot of really awesome people who make my life richer simply by being in it. They help me through the bad times and celebrate the good times with me.

3. Juliet:

Juliet is the niece of my heart that I was lucky enough to watch come in to this world. ( I still have a blog post to write about all of that, and I think I am finally ready to do so.. ) It was one of the most profound moments I have had in my entire life, and it changed me, and that precious little girl healed a huge hole in my heart. My soul is forever connected to that little darling.

4. The basics:

We do not have much these days, but we have a roof over our heads, food in the cabinets, and we have heat in the Winter and air in the Summer. So many do not have even that, and I am very thankful that our basic needs are being met.

5. Jack:

We have had our share of butting heads over the last few months, but there is no one else in the world I want to be with. He has my heart and soul...even if I want to smack him over the head with something every now and then.

6.  Health:

Alex and I were really sick last week, to the point we considered taking her to the hospital more than once. Luckily she ( and I as well ) is healing and is pretty much back to her normal self. Alex has been sick 3 times in all of her 8 years, and this time was the worst. I admit it scared me. I am very thankful that she is on the mend and acting like her old self again.

7. Cooler Weather:

The weather has been really nice. Very cool at night and slightly cool to comfortable during the day. This is my favorite time of year.

8. Day time TV:

I know that sounds dumb, and I am not talking about soap operas or anything, but there are some great shows I love; like Rachel and The Chew, which are about crafting and cooking, and I watch the Create channel a lot, which is also about crafting, food, and travel. I have learned a lot from these shows, and it makes me happy and content to watch them. Which is great, considering we do not  have cable or anything.

9. The Internet:

Since in these tough financial times, my internet is not exactly a guarantee these days, and I am very thankful for each day I have the net. It is how I talk to the people most important to me, it is how I learn, it is how I write, and it is what keeps me sane.

10. All of you:

I am so very glad that you are all here, reading what I have to say. You all understand that sometimes life gets in the way of writing, and at various times so many of you have shown me such a huge amount of support, and that means the world to me. Some of my closest friends are in my life because of this blog, and I am forever grateful for that.  I love you all, and I hope you stick around!

So there you have it. A small list of what I am thankful for these days. What are you thankful for?

Be sure to tune in tomorrow for a new Foodie Friday segment!

Ten Things Thursday ( And NaBloWriMo Day 18 ) : Ten Songs I Love

I am combining two posts into one today. It is my Friday and I want to do some fun stuff instead of write all day today lol.

Today I give you Ten Songs I Love! These are just a few of the many songs that I love. I am a huge fan of almost all music, and these are a few that stand out to me for various reasons, or evoke a strong emotion.

This one will probably surprise some, since I am a pagan, and most assume I abhor or refuse to have anything to do with anything Christian based, but that is not true at all. This is a song I play when I am feeling despair and feel lost and alone. It usually makes me cry my eyes out, but it helps. I have been listening to it a lot since Daddy died...

1. Come to Jesus by Mindy Smith

2. The Kill by 30 Seconds to Mars

This was the first song I had ever heard by 30 Seconds to Mars, and it was also when I found out that Jared Leto was the lead singer. I adore Jared, and how I missed  him and his band is beyond me, but this is one of those songs that I play often and sing at the top of my voice.

3. Titanium by David Guetta featuring Sia

This is a recent find, I had never heard of either of the artists, but I saw the video one day on a station we used to have called Cool TV, and it stopped me in my tracks. Sia's voice is so haunting and gorgeous, and this became anew anthem for me. No matter how many times I get knocked down in life, even when I rather stay down sometimes, I get back up and I keep on going. This song is about exactly that.

4. The Surface of the Sun by John Murphy

This song is off of the musical score of the movie "Sunshine" and it is a song that evokes very strong emotions in me. No words, just gorgeous music, and if you have seen the movie, you will understand a little better about why it hits me so hard. My soul unfolds when I hear this, and if possible, I feel so happy and peaceful while feeling crushing sadness all at the same time.

5. Pictures by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow

This is the song that brought Jack and I together. I was with someone else, and Jack was single but running through a series of one night stand type deals, but it was me he wanted to be with. This song came on the radio one night as he was driving by the store where I worked, and he decided to come in and take a chance. We have been together ever since, almost 9 years.

6. Silver Springs by Fleetwood Mac

I love everything from Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood mac, but this song gets to me. Pining for an old love, or even having a current love so strong that it transcends time...this is one of those I belt out at the top of my lungs as well.

7. If It Makes You Happy by Sheryl Crow

I have loved this song for a long time. Not sure why, it just always makes me feel better when I listen to it.

8. Already Gone by the Eagles

I love the Eagles and this is another feel good song...that when it all goes wrong, you keep going.

9. What if I Came Knocking by JohnMellencamp

This song has a lot of history with me....a long and detailed one that I do not really want to go  into as it will take days to type lol. It represents a person and a time period in my life all at the same time, and is very special to me.

10. Seven Spanish Angels by Willie Nelson and Ray Charles
This was my Dad's favorite song. It is a duet with Willie Nelson and Ray Charles, and I have been listening to it since I was a child. It has always affected me.

There you have it folks. Hope you enjoyed the videos and let me know in the comments if you liked them!

Ten Things Thursday: 10 Awesome Things That Happened This Week

Good evening everyone!

I bet you thought I would not do this, since I am posting so many other things each day, eh?

SURPRISE!

I almost did not, due to it being so damn late and I am tired...but I still wanted to do it so here I am.

This week I am doing Ten Awesome Things That Happened This Week.

Ready?

1. So. Much. Writing.

Seriously. There is so much writing to be done this month in general, but this week, the start of it all, has been so damn awesome. Add to that the fact I got asked to do an author interview? Psssht. I am so freaking thrilled.

2. Jack is returning to normal

This would have been number one if not for how happy I am about all the writing. Jack has been a total ass due to being in pain and zonked out on mood altering pain meds, lack of sleep, not wanting to eat...it has been terrible. The last couple of days have been so much better. His mind and temperament is returning to normal, even if his body is still healing. The stress is so much less. That means I can function so much better if I am not walking around on eggshells. For real.

  3. Closure

Not to sound morbid or anything, but now that there is a fast approaching concrete date for us to scatter my father's ashes, I feel better. No more will we have that looming over our heads, dragging on. It will all be over and done with, and then we can begin to heal in earnest, and not have this duct tape patch over our hearts, holding us together until we could do this last thing, which is spread his ashes as he wanted.

4. The weather

Even thought the temperature is bouncing around from cool to hot, as is typical for early Fall in Florida, the evenings have been much cooler finally, and I have been able to open my bedroom window at night with a fan stuck in it, drawing the cool air into my room. I have been sleeping so much better. Last night the air was cooler, AND it was raining. I was sleeping SO deeply. It was awesome. I can not wait until the temps stay cooler during the day so I can keep the house open all the time.

5. Bones is back

Fall means that some of my rare TV shows come back. (Rare meaning I hardly ever watch TV, unless it is something to do with Gordon Ramsey..) First to come back is the show Bones, which I adore. I love the characters of that show, they are all so awesome, and I actually think about them when the show is off for the season lol. Oddly enough, I do not care for the books the series is based on at ALL. I do not like that version of Brennan. I like the TV version so much better. Plus, I relate to her...I am a walking textbook at times, ask my friends lol. SO misunderstood *winks*.

6. New friends

I have had the fortune to meet some new people over the last couple of months, mostly through the writing projects that I am a part of, and I am very happy about that. They are awesome people, and I am proud to be associated with them.I look forward to getting to know them even more as time goes on.

7. Fall Food

Aww yeah. Chili, soups, stews, casseroles. I am so happy that there is a nip in the air, because the first thing I want to do is start making hearty things to eat for us. Tomorrow I am making potato, onion and bacon soup for dinner. Alex will be in love, it is one of her favorite meals.

8. Spark

I love this time of year, for many reasons, but the main one is my spark, my fire returns. As the darker half of the year approaches, I feel something inside of me return to life...like a hibernating animal, only I sleep during the hot and miserable days of Summer, and I revel in the cold, crisp nights, and the clear and chilly days. My energy comes back, I have more focus, I want to be busy all the time. These writing gigs came at the perfect time...in the first few days of the awakening, when everything is fresh and new feeling.  I am still sluggish enough to be exhausted by the time bedtime hits, but not long after waking I am full of fire and feeling good. The colder it gets, the better I feel. Until full on Winter hits and I will be shivering and bitching about my ankle, but until then, it will be awesome lol.

9. Books

I have picked up so many kick ass books for my tablet ( or rather, the kindle cloud reader, as I do most of my reading here on the desktop these days ) that I am now totally sure I will never be able to read them all in the rest of my lifetime, but still, every day I go and get more. I am a book whore, which works, since being a book whore and leaving a book review is what got me the gig writing the author interview. Woot!

10. Movies

I have not watched any movies in a while, I just have so much going on I do not have the time or the focus to sit down and watch a whole movie, but we had company over the weekend, and I watched The Avengers ( which was awesome even though I missed a bit in the middle, I had a couple of things to do ) and The Hunger Games, ( which sucked ass; I mean I know most movies never do the book justice, but that movie was terrible ) and it was nice to sit down and chill for a while, and watch a good movie with good company. Jack even sat out here with us in the living room for the first time since surgery. He paid for it later in the pain department, but it was nice to "see" him. I am usually here at my desk, and he is usually in the bedroom, laying down and watching TV or playing his game on the PS3...resting. So it was almost "normal" for a few hours. It was nice.

So there you have it folks. This week has been pretty awesome for me, and now you know why. I am happier and more relaxed mentally, and really busy physically, which is pretty awesome. Now, my writing is FINALLY done for the day, and I STILL have several things to do before I can fall in to bed tonight. But you know what? It is "Friday Eve" ( phrase coined by one of my friends/readers Robin's son ) which means tomorrow is the start of the WEEKEND! This witch is SO sleeping in this weekend! I hope you enjoyed all the posts today, and I will be back dark and early in the morning!

Have a great night folks!

Ten Things Thursday: Ten Things That Make Me Happy

It has been a very, very stressful week, and I was originally going to do another ten things I am grateful for post, but I did that recently so I will change it a bit and make it things that make me happy. It will hopefully achieve the same results, as I need a reminder every now and then of such things.

1. Family and Friends who understand:

I am so happy that the people who mean the most to me are understanding of the fact that times are tough right now, and I am not always available, and when I am, my brain is so shot out and tired I just want to veg, I do not want to talk about anything deep, and that I need to withdraw from the outside world for a while and focus on me and whatever I am going through at that time. I know it may sound selfish to some, but the ones who matter know that I have a lot on my plate and that I am not myself right now. Thank you, to those people.

2. Cooler Weather:

Fall is officially here on the calender, and thankfully the temperature got the memo. It is already much cooler at night, I have slept with my window open a few nights, and the days are not so humid and hot either. Winter is much harder on me now that I have lost some weight, and have a lot of metal in my bones thanks to breaking my ankle, so super cold temps are not much fun, but Fall weather is great. Nice days and chilly nights, where I can open my window and snuggle under my warm blankets are so awesome.

3. Closure:

My Mom called me the other day, and informed me that the road leading back to where my Dad wanted his ashes scattered is finally repaired and open again, since being destroyed by Tropical Storm Debbie a couple of months ago. That means in a couple of weeks we are finally going to make that trip and scatter Dad to the wind and the ocean, as he wanted. I have come to terms with his passing, although I still miss him terribly, and I know he is "gone" and his ashes were just what is left of his physical body, but it makes me happy to know that soon we will be able to fulfill his last wish and set him free. A final send off, making it official, gives me a sense of comfort for some reason. Right now it still feels so unfinished.

4. Books:

Reading is one of the things that has helped me keep my sanity the last week, but also for most of my life. I have been able to lose myself in a few books this week, and I have welcomed the distraction they have provided. I even had a good friend gift an ebook to me that I have been wanting, which was awesome. If not for the books and being able to forget about what is happening here during the day, I think I might have lost my mind. They provide me with an escape from the crushing amount of stress, now and other times in my life. Books have saved my life more than once, and as dramatic as that sounds...it is true.

5. Music:

I almost made this into a top ten songs of all time post, but I want to include videos and stuff for that, and I have to do that early in the morning or after 2 AM on a weekend, so it does not go against my daily bandwidth allotment. Anyway, I spend a lot of evenings with my headphones on, once Jack is settled and Alex is home and settled, and can alert me if Jack needs me since I would not be able to hear him. I can sit here, and try to decompress, and block out the outside world, the annoying everyday sounds that just seem to grate on my nerves these days. It puts me in a bubble all on my own, which is very much needed. I can listen to sad songs and release my emotional pain, I can play upbeat songs to raise my mood, I can play edgy songs to let me get rid of my anger. It ranks right up there books, keeping me sane and offering me escape.

6. Sleep:

I have a love/hate relationship with sleep. On one hand, I adore to sleep, and hate to wake up. I love being snuggled in my super comfy bed, under my soft and warm blankets, in the dark, with the whirring of the 3 fans I have in my room to help me to sleep. On the other hand, I hate the fact that I HAVE to sleep. I have a schedule to keep, during the school week, which sucks. Even when I am exhausted, I hate the fact that I have to totally shut down my life (so to speak ) to recharge. I am fine when I WANT to go to bed and rest, I dislike it when I HAVE to go to bed, because of other things I NEED to do, while sleeping sometimes prevents me from things I WANT to do. Then there is the whole " TO tired to actually sleep" which is a special form of torture. I will not go into that now though, as this is a "happy things" post lol.

7. Mornings:

This one is probably shocking to anyone who knows me or reads here often, as I am a self-proclaimed night owl. However, in the morning, after Alex is on the bus, the mornings are starting to get cool, and I like being outside in it, and when I come home, Jack is usually still in bed, so I have a few moments of silence and the bliss of being alone, no one but the dog and I. Silence and being alone are two huge luxuries that I am not often awarded.

8. Blogs

I really love logging in each day and reading what everyone has posted overnight. I do not comment often, but I read everything. I love taking time out to catch up on my blogging friend's lives, and see what interesting things they have posted. I get to lose myself in their lives instead of worrying about my own for a change.

9. Being a Gamer:

I play video games. Console games mostly, I am a die hard Playstation fan, although I do want an X-box 360, there are some titles and perks with X-Box that do not come with the Sony systems. I will play computer games when I find one that holds my attention, but usually there is a console version of most games and I much rather play those. Those are the ultimate distraction, I am actively participating in a different type of life, living vicariously in that fantasy world, if you will. The truth is, sometimes reality sucks, and when there is nothing you can do to change it other than give things time to happen as they should ( like healing from a massive surgery for instance *ahem* ) then there is nothing wrong with a little escapism in my opinion. As long as the fantasy world does not overshadow and take the place of the real world, then I see nothing wrong with it.

10. Alex:

Yes, my baby girl. She drives me bat shit insane half the time, with her constant chattering, and even though I enjoy my "quiet time" when she is at school, by the time it is time for her to come home, I am missing her and the burst of energy she brings home with her every day. Sure, that means there is more to do for a while until homework, dinner, bathing, and hearing about her day went is finished, but the energy of the day changes the second she steps off the bus. In fact, it is now time to go collect my little fireball from the bus stop.

Have a great day folks!

Ten Things Thursday: 10 Things I am Grateful For.

Today I decided to do a Ten Things I am Grateful For post. Things have been tough here, which I have written about, but there are a lot of things I am very thankful for, and I thought this week I would list them, partially as a reminder to myself that when things get crazy, there are things to hold on to that will get me through.

1. Family

Both blood and chosen, I am so grateful for my family. Jack is my rock and the kids are my world, they are the reason I get up every day, the reason I keep trying, when sometimes I just want to run away or sleep it all away. I am thankful my Mother still walks this Earth, even if we do not always get along. I am thankful that the last eight years with my Dad were so good before he passed. I am so thankful for my chosen family, my friends, my adopted brothers and sisters. The ones who give me their unwavering love and support, even when I am moody and grumpy, or weepy and hopeless, or stressed out and pulling my hair out. Without them, and their love, support, encouragement, and assistance, I would be lost.

2. My home

I do not have a very large and glamorous house, but I have a comfortable home. We are not rich, or drive a fancy vehicle, but our truck is reliable and gets us where we need to go. We do not have a lot of money, and a lot of the time we have to scrape up enough to make ends meet, but at least we have those things. So many are without homes and vehicles and enough food to eat, and while times can be tough, we have those things, and I am so thankful for that.

3. The Internet

I know it may sound frivolous or cheesy, but without my net I would probably go insane. It is how I talk to my friends, it is how I write, it is how I learn and stay informed, and it is how I stay entertained. My life would be much more lonely and boring without the internet.

4. Writing and Blogging

I am thankful I have the ability to write. To release, to inform, to make people laugh, to be a part of different communities because of my writing. I have met some of the most amazing and dear to me people due to me being able to string together cohesive sentences in my little corner of the internet. Writing is like breathing to me; vital, important, and necessary.

5. Alex's Amazing School and Teachers

Alex is in a small Charter School, and I am so in love with it. It is small and dedicated to it's students. It is a Science and Art focused school, which is perfect for the creative soul that Alex is. Her teachers are all totally amazing, and they go out of their way to make sure Alex and the other students get the attention they need to truly be successful, and I feel it is because of them that Alex loves school so much. I am so thankful for them.

6. Books

I am a bookworm, and books have been my friends when there was no one around. I have read books that literally changed my life, and some that may have even saved it. Books make me happy, they fill me up, and now, in the digital age, I have more books on my computer and other devices than I can probably read in what is left of my lifetime, but I still add more daily. Books are like my children, precious and needing love. I am thankful that I love to read, and have so much material to work with.

7. Food and Cooking

This one ties into the home one in a way, as I am glad we finally have enough food to eat, but it goes beyond that. I love to cook, and I enjoy food. It engages all of my senses, and the act of cooking grounds me and I am in an almost zen state when I am in the kitchen working on a recipe. Nothing makes me feel more accomplished than when I have made a recipe that everyone loves. If I were to win a Pulitzer one day, the truth is, if you told me my dinner last night was the most amazing thing you have ever eaten, it would probably make me three times as happy as winning the award lol.

8.Love

Again, it may sound cheesy, but I am the woman who felt for most of my life that I was not good enough, that no one would ever really love me for who I am, instead of who they think I should be. I have been through a lot of pain because of a lack of love, and it colored my whole life, so now, that I am surrounded with love and acceptance, it is a miraculous thing to me. I have a wonderful husband, amazing kids, a few solid family members, and the most AMAZING friends that anyone could ever ask for. They are all so diverse and intelligent and talented. Luckily they seem to feel the same way about me, so the fact that I am surrounded by love, and can finally give love in return, makes me feel that my life is so much richer because of it.

9. Being able to roll with the flow

This year, ( and others in my life ) have been tough, but I think I have gotten pretty good at riding the waves in the ocean of my life. There have been times I felt I would drown in the turbulent seas, but so far I have been able to keep my head above the water, and I am proud of that fact. Being bi-polar and prone to fits of depression and apathy, it would be rather easy just to sink beneath the waves and stop fighting, and to be honest I have considered it more than once. Something in my spirit will not let me do that though. It commands me to fight, to reach the surface once more, to keep trying to reach the shore. In my past, the easiest way to deal with my problems was to run from them, pick up and start over, instead of trying to fight for what I had.  I am thankful that I have the will to stand my ground now, to dig in my heels and push back when life starts trying to engage me in a shoving match. I am so much stronger and so much more whole than I used to be. Now, with the love and support I have, not only from my friends and family, but FOR MYSELF, I feel that I can get through anything.

10. You

That's right. You. The one sitting here reading this. I am so grateful for YOU. Each and every one of you, that come here and share my world with me. You have laughed with me, some of you have even cried with me. You have shared in my triumphs and have felt sympathy for my despair. I write for myself, meaning even if no one ever read a word I have written, I would STILL write...but you...knowing you ARE here, reading my words, helps me to feel connected to something so special. Some of the closest people in my life I have met right here, through this blog. I have been given so many wonderful opportunities because of you. So today...while I am thankful for you all every day....today I am especially grateful that you are all here, and are a part of my life. You make my world a richer place to live in. Thank you.

Ten Things Thursday: Ten Books I Love

Howdy Folks. Time for another round of Ten Things Thursday! Today I am going to give you a list of ten books that I love. I am a avid reader, and I have been since my parents taught me to read when I was three. These books have stuck with me long after I read them. Hopefully you will check them out, and if you have read any of them, feel free to share your opinions on them in the comments!

Here we go!

1. Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel.

Anyone who knows me knew that this book would be the first on the list. I have read every single book in this series that follows the life of a prehistoric girl named Ayla. This, the first book in the series, follows her from the time she was orphaned by an earthquake at age 5 through being found by a group of Neanderthals and raised as one of them. She is considered an "Other" due to her difference in appearance and abilities, but she is loved by the family that took her in, and hated by other members of the Clan. This book made me run the full spectrum of emotions, from joy to heart wrenching sadness. I have read them all many times, and will read them many times again.

2. Ride the Wind by Lucia St. Clair Robson

I was given this book many years ago, when I was a young teen, and I instantly fell in love with it. It is based on the true story of Cynthia Ann Parker, who was kidnapped in 1836 by Comanche Indians when she was a young girl. After a very rough beginning she was given to an Indian family and raised as their daughter. The story documents her life with them, from planning to escape to eventually coming to love her new family, marrying the warrior who originally kidnapped her, and having children. It is a captivating novel, full of emotions, especially the end. I had the original copy for over ten years, and I read it so much it fell apart, and I had to replace it. This is another book that has a permanent spot on my bookshelf.

3. The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley

Although this book was written first, it is actually the last in the series penned by Marion and later, after her death, Diana L. Paxson. I had started this book a hundred times over the years, starting when I was a young teen, but never managed to finish it until a few years ago. Once I found out that there were other books, I quickly bought the rest of them, and set out to read them in chronological order. This book is about Morgaine and her life as what would be King Arthur's sister, and later a priestess of Avalon, throughout the rise and fall of Camelot. Very in depth and and enchanting, it draws you in and transports you to a different place in time.

4. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle

When I was in 5th grade, my teacher, Mrs. Habib brought this book in to read to the class every Thursday. I was captivated by it, and asked her to borrow it once she was done reading it to the class. I did a book report on it, and loved the book so much, she gave it to me as a gift. I unfortunately do not own the book anymore, which was first in a series of 5 books I think, but I hope to one day own them all again. The first book is about Meg Murry and her brother Charles, who are visited one dark and stormy night by a strange character, who informs them that tesseracts's are indeed real. A tesseract is a wrinkle in time. The book takes the children on a journey through another realm of time, in search of her missing scientist father, who disappeared while working on a top secret project for the government. The book was really strange, but wonderful, and it has stuck with me all these years.

5. Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell

This was another book that was read in my class in my 5th grade year, and much like the last book, I fell in love with it, asked to borrow it, and was later given it to me by my teacher. This is the story of an American Indian girl named Karana, a 12 year old whose family were killed by another Indian Tribe. The other survivors evacuated the island of the coast of California, but she jumped out of the boat to remain with her little brother, who had been left behind. The brother dies shortly thereafter, and the book goes on to chronicle the life of Karana who lived alone for 18 years on another small island. This is one I also no longer own, but would love to have it again, as the story has stuck with me all these years.

6. The Body Sacred by Dianne Sylvan

I was given this book by a dear friend who thought it would help me with my *at the time* crippling body image. It was the first book I have ever read by Dianne Sylvan, and now she is one of my most favorite authors. The book is about her personal story of struggling with being a larger woman, sexual abuse, and the devastating self image she has had since then. Pagan at the time she wrote it, it combines her own personal faith with her journey of self acceptance. I do not exaggerate in the least when I say this book literally changed my life. I looked at myself in a whole new light, and it helped me to shed so much self-doubt and self-abuse over my body image and the way I imagined that others perceived me. If you struggle with body image issues, no matter what your size, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

7. Wicked by Gregory Maguire

I have no idea where I first got this book. I think I picked it up at the flea market, where there used to be an elderly couple that sold tons of books every weekend. The story is about The Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz, told from her, Elphaba's, point of view. It answers the questions of why was she so wicked, what her life story was, and how she came to be the Wicked Witch that terrorized Dorthy later in life. There was a sequel as well, Son of a Witch, than was equally good. It was a surprising read, and I really enjoyed it.

8. The Drought by Lily White

This is a recent read, and as far as I know it is only available in digital format. It is a long book, set in a small town in Havensburg, Kentucky, which is suffering from the worst drought in history. The town's water reserve is drying up, and there seems to be no relief in sight, as wildfires from a neighboring city approach the dry town. The story follows several of the town's citizens, including several from the local high school, as they deal with their lives which include a lot of heartache and strife. Every one is connected in sometimes very twisted ways, influencing each other, even if they are unaware how, throughout the entire story. It is a long read, 799 pages, and it was almost impossible to put down. I had to force myself to go to sleep most nights.

9. 30 Pieces of Silver by Carolyn McCray

For some reason the link to the book ( in the title, which every book I write about here today is linked...in each title ) says that the book is available for pre-order from Amazon...but I got the book during a free period off of Amazon, as have a few others I recommended it to, so I have no clue why it says pre-order...unless they redid the book. At any rate, this was another recent find, and it was amazing. Partly set in modern times, and partly set in the time of Judas and Jesus, the story follows Judas' story, in his final days with Jesus, and in modern times it follows a woman named Rebecca Monroe, a doctor of science, who gets tangled up with a Sargent Brandt from the military, who both meet back up with Becca's former professor and mentor Dr. Lochum. It is a religious thriller, and a surprisingly excellent book. Full of twists and turns and nail biting moments, it was a very hard book to put down. Do not let the religious tone throw you off, the book is NOTHING like what it seems!

10. Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

Even though the book came out some time ago, as well as the movie, I just got around to reading this book last month. Another flea market find, I picked it up for 2 bucks and read it at random intervals last month. ( Mostly while we had no power...) I did not expect to like the book that much, although I have no idea why. This was one of the rare times I saw a movie before I read the book it was based on, and I really liked the movie. That means the book is usually 100 times better, but I was still leery about reading it. I should not have been. It was a very good book, easy flowing and told the story of Liz's difficult journey to find herself. Probably just about everyone has heard of this book and what it is about, so I will not go into it here, but I will say it was excellent and I am very glad I read it.

There you have it, ten books that I love! Do let me know if you have read these, and what you thought, and if you decide to read them later, come back and tell me what you thought!

Until next time!

Ten Things Thursday: 10 Things That Annoy Me

This list will be short and to the point. I am dragging today, and easily irritated so naturally the list is about things that annoy me lol.

1. Government agencies taking their sweet time to do ANYTHING.

Seriously, people depend and rely on you for services, sometimes you are all that keeps them alive. Making them wait is a terrible and heartless thing to do.

2. Companies that outsource their help desks.

When I call your company, needing help, probably freaking out over whatever it is that is wrong, the last thing I want to deal with it someone who speaks poor English, reads from a script and refuses to deviate from it, and transfer you from person to person, never solving the problem until I hang up in frustration.

3. The nurse at Jack's Doctor's office.

She should actually be in the number one spot. She is terrible. I have never met a more uncaring and heartless woman in my entire life. When all this is over, we WILL be reporting her to every board we can.

4. People who cause trouble for no reason other than personal pleasure.

This one is self-explanatory. People who lie and stir up shit are assholes. 'Nuff said.

5. Alex's crackhead extreme energy bursts and incessant talking.

I thought that she would calm down when school started, since she would be doing more and getting up so much earlier, but she seems to be even MORE jacked up when she comes home now. Her energy level could power a small country for a year, and her non-stop chattering is driving me BONKERS. I love the kid, but if it were not considered child abuse or something, I would duct tape her mouth shut for a few hours every afternoon. I am only partially kidding.

6. Rain. Effing RAIN!

As I have moaned about before, it has been a rainy Summer. Every day, most of the day, torrential downpours. We have had so many trees hit by lightning in our backyard, and that is what fried our phone and power lines. ( Turns out that phone guy was not responsible for my ground wire giving out. That is the one thing he did NOT fuck up that day. ) Then here came Tropical Storm Issac. I went into panic mode. Normally the storms do not even phase me, but I live in a mandatory evac spot, very close to an already overflowing river ( due to all the rain ) and the ocean. All I could think of was we would be flooded, as the ground is SO saturated from all the rain, there was no way we would handle 6 to 9 feet of storm surge, and 12 to 20 inches of rain that they were predicting. I was in a fine state of anxiety. Luckily we dodged a bullet and we got some wind and less rain than we do on a normal day this Summer, so my concerns were unfounded. However, now that it passed us by, it went RIGHT BACK to raining 75% of the day every day. They even predict we will get snow here this Winter, because it will be very cold and very wet. North Florida, people. Tallahassee. Capital. Hot Summers, balmy Winter's. SNOW!? *Shakes head*

*Prayers, healing, and love going out to all the people who HAVE been messed up by Issac.*

7. Getting up so early in the mornings.

It did not take me long to adjust to the school schedule again, but the last week has been exhausting for some reason. I am ready to go to bed at 7 at night if I could, and I have been waking around 5 every morning, even though I do not have to get up till 6. I do not know wtf is going on, but I am constantly dragging and it sucks. I am so looking forward to the long weekend so I can SLEEP IN! Alex has turned into a bear in the mornings as well. Last year she jumped out of bed, ready to greet the day, and now I all but have to drag her by the foot out of the bed. As I am not a morning person, this makes morning time a little more torturous.

8. Washing Dishes.

I would cook 5 course meals every single night if I never had to wash another dish again. It is my least favorite chore. Even though it usually does not take me long ( unless Jack cooks, then I might as well pull up a stool and get comfy ) it is just the ONE household chore I can not accept. I like cleaning most things, it is therapeutic for me..but dishes? I rather eat off throw away plates and plastic forks. (Yeah yeah, I know, terrible for the environment. Which is the only reason I do NOT eat off throw away plates and plastic forks. Your welcome, Mother Nature. )

9. Fleas.

Here in North Florida, in the rural areas, where I live, we have a flea epidemic this year. (Is that the right term? Epidemic? No? Okay, we have a metric shit ton of fleas. Infestation? It that a better word? Whatever.) Not just us, but everywhere up here. The messed up part is, only the INSIDE dog is eaten up with them, no matter what we do. We even went the professional route, to no avail. We have that DE earth, which works, but I DESPISE my house being covered in white dust. It gets all over EVERYTHING and I get all twitchy inside and really pissy. The outside dog, Harley? Not a damn flea on her.  Soccer, the inside dog? He is supposed to be white and black but he is mostly black. Not to mention I am COVERED in flea bites on my feet and lower legs. Only me. Not Jack, not Alex, they have no issues what so ever. Me? I look like I have chicken pox on my feet. Bastards.

10. Stress Migraines.

I have been plagued with them this Summer. All the atmospheric pressure from the rain and storms, the loss of power for days, the extended family issues, the 400 light bill we can't pay due to the power surges driving our bill up, rent, not having enough to eat for all of us on most days, being totally broke...and a thousand little things have raised my blood pressure and will spark a migraine at the drop of a hat. I am not the type to get "just a headache," I would LOVE to have one of those back of the brain, " Ow this is annoying but I can deal with it" type deals, but alas, I get the "OMFG MY HEAD IS GOING TO EXPLODE OUT OF MY EYEBALLS!!" type migraines. I lose my vision at times, they get so bad. They suck. Balls.

So there is my ranty Ten Things post for today. Just had to get that stuff out of my system, and I already feel better. Thanks for reading my bitching. I am going to drag my ass in the kitchen and feed us, do the dishes, then hold this chair down until I can finally slip off to bed. Have a great night folks, and I hope you enjoy your weekend!

Ten Things Thursday: 10 Things I have learned in my 30's

So I have decided to create a Ten Things Thursday segment ( thanks to Vickie at Aoibheal's Lair for making the graphic!! ) to keep me in the habit of writing, and to distract me from my life lol. They might be all part of a basic theme, or they might be random, depends on what mood I am in that day! For my first post, I am giving you:

Ten Things I have learned in my 30's

1. Moisturize.

Seriously. The older I get, the more my skin feels like a dried up corn husk. Slather on the lotion or coconut oil or something. Just do it. You will thank me later.

2. Think things through.

Having blue hair sounded fun, and if I were still in my 20's it would be okay, but I have realized I worked to damn hard to become a respectable adult, and the fact that strangers look at me with their lip curled bothers me. I much rather be remembered as the chick with awesome red hair than the middle aged chick trying to hold on to her youth. Maybe if I lived in a more progressive city it would not make me feel so out of place, but I live in Backwoods County and I feel awkward.. I do not like being looked upon without the respect I deserve and worked so hard for. So when my roots grow our or the color fades, whichever comes first, I am going back to red, where I belong.

3. Move around

This is probably not much of an issue for most people, but if you are mostly sedentary as I am, due to body pain or any other issue, get up and move around. I do not mean that you have to go out there and jump around like Richard Simmons on crack, but take a walk a couple of times a week. You can weigh 120 pounds and still have shitty blood pressure and other issues that a simple walk can help. If you can not walk, do leg and arm lifts while in bed if you are able. I have lost 35 pounds by doing those three simple things.

4. Take time for yourself.

This is the hardest one for me, and probably a lot of other people. I am a Mom, a wife, a best friend, a daughter, and 47 other things every single day. But if I am going bat shit crazy then I am no good to my family or myself. Take a bath or read a book after the kids are in bed or after a busy day at the office or whatever. Listen to some music. Write, draw, cook, create something, if those are the things that bring you joy. Call a friend. Write a letter. Even if it is ten minutes a day before you collapse in bed for the night, take some time just for you.

5. Laugh at least once daily.

Really. It helps so much. As most of you know, I am bi-polar, and my life is pretty much shit right now, but if I can laugh, everything seems to be a little easier to take. I know it sounds cheesy, but the website Damn You Auto Correct has probably literally saved my life more than once. No matter how low I am feeling, I can go there, and in 5 minutes or less I am sitting there with tears rolling down my face, looking like a mental seal, clapping and beating on my desk, unable to breathe. So a quick dopamine fix can do wonders for you. Not to mention it engages over 15 muscles in the body each time you laugh, so you get a tiny workout while you do it ;)

6. Learn something.

The older I get the more I have to keep on myself about not getting mentally complacent. I do not have the option to go back to school at this time, so it is easy to fall into the " I did my time, I do not need any more life skills, I know enough to live out the rest of my life" mentality, and in my opinion, that is a slow form of death. Keep filling up that brain. Education, even if self taught, is so important in my opinion. In the internet age, there is no reason to just sit around..there is a whole WORLD out there waiting for you to discover it!

7. Sleep.

Ten percent of the population suffer from sleep deprivation, which can cause a host of health issues, from mood swings to an increased risk of heart problems and even diabetes. Sleep is also important for our body to take care of free radicals, which can increase the risk of cancer. Skip Letterman, DVR your favorite late night show, skip guys or girls night out every now and then, and get some shut eye. You need it.

8. Make friends.

I do not mean go out there and be a social butterfly. I mean have one or two really good friends that you can confide in, count on, and share your life with. They do not have to be someone you go party with, but even having someone there who is willing to listen ( or read, if you have an aversion to phones, as I do ) can make all the difference in the world. Even better, be that friend for someone else. You just might save a life.

9. Don't make promises you can't keep.

We are each as only good as our words. Your word is your bond. Throw in whatever cliche you want, the point is still the same. Never promise anyone anything lightly. You just might be the one thing that can save a person from going under, and because you promised, it gives them hope. If you break that promise, or treat it like it was nothing important, you destroy valuable trust and credibility. Learn how to say no if you must, it is better to be honest and unable to do something than to lie about it or not follow through and shatter someone's hopes and sense of trust. Trust is something very hard to earn and keep. Don't be the person everyone knows they can not rely on. This includes making promises to yourself as well. If you tell yourself that you are going to do it, take all possible measures to ensure that you do it. If you can not rely on yourself, how can anyone else?

10. Love yourself.

The most important one of all is that you have to learn how to love yourself. Flaws and all. You are a human being, and we make mistakes, we screw up, things fail. As long as you are not the type of person who just says and does things lightly, then you can pick yourself back up and try again. You are the best YOU that you can be. No one else can take your place, no one else can be YOU. You have talents and thought processes and emotions that no one else experiences quite like you do. When you screw up, tell yourself " It is OKAY" and try again. When you do something well, be the first person to clap yourself on the back, be your own biggest fan. You are the smartest, kindest, most beautiful YOU. You are worthy of love, and the first person who should give it to you is yourself. Fill yourself up with love, and let it radiate from within you. Everyone will see it, everyone will notice it. It does not matter if you are with someone or single...when you love yourself, you are never alone.
